Description

When a compact electric motor cannot provide the torque density or stall tolerance required for low-speed machinery, the Cleco A8R336M A8 Series Reversible Axial Piston Air Motor delivers 2.7 HP through a slow-turning 75 RPM free speed and a high 638 ft-lbs stall torque rating. Axial piston design uses pistons arranged along the motor axis to produce high torque at lower speeds, making this motor well suited for powered fixtures, mixers, indexing equipment, winches, conveyors, and other machine-drive applications where controlled rotary force matters more than high RPM.

The A8R336M is a reversible, rear-exhaust air motor with a 33.6:1 gear ratio, allowing the motor to change direction while keeping exhaust routed away from the work interface. Its 1-3/8" diameter keyed spindle provides a positive mechanical drive connection for couplings, sprockets, pulleys, and custom fixtures, while the face-mounting configuration supports integration into OEM machinery and plant-built equipment.

Type: Reversible Axial Piston Air Motor | Series: A8 Series | Model: A8R336M | Max Power: 2.7 HP / 2.01 kW | RPM at Max HP: 38 RPM | Free Speed: 75 RPM | Stall Torque: 638 ft-lbs / 865 Nm | Starting Torque: 471 ft-lbs / 639 Nm | Gear Ratio: 33.6:1 | Spindle Type: 1-3/8" Diameter Keyed Spindle | Mounting: Face Mounting | Control: Reversible | Exhaust: Rear Exhaust | Weight: 51 lbs / 23.1 kg | Max Overhung Load at Stall: 1000 lbs / 454 kg | Air Inlet: 1/2" NPTF | Air Consumption: 83 CFM / 3.18 m³/min | Rated Pressure: 90 PSI / 620 kPa

Features:

  • Axial piston motor construction provides high torque output at low operating speeds for machinery drive and powered fixture applications.
  • Reversible control allows the motor to drive clockwise or counterclockwise when the installation requires bidirectional motion.
  • Rear exhaust directs discharged air away from the driven mechanism and work area.
  • 33.6:1 gear ratio reduces output speed while multiplying torque for low-speed, high-load applications.
  • 1-3/8" keyed spindle provides a secure drive interface for mechanical couplings and custom power-transmission components.
  • Face-mounting configuration supports fixed installation into OEM equipment, production machinery, and plant-built drive systems.
  • Air motor design can stall under load without the electrical burnout risk associated with many electric motors, provided the application is properly specified.

Applications:

  • Industrial machinery integration for low-speed rotary drives, indexing devices, powered fixtures, and automation stations.
  • Mixing and agitation equipment where high starting torque helps move viscous materials or overcome initial load resistance.
  • Conveyor, winch, and hoist-related drive systems that require controlled air-powered rotation and reversible operation.
  • Hazard-sensitive or wet environments where pneumatic power may be preferred over an electric motor, subject to site safety review and compatibility requirements.
  • Plant maintenance and MRO replacement projects where a keyed-spindle axial piston air motor is needed for an existing machine design.

FAQs:

  • Q: What does stall torque mean on the Cleco A8R336M?
A: Stall torque is the maximum torque the air motor can produce when the output shaft is stopped under load. For this model, the stall torque is 638 ft-lbs, which is the key number to review when the motor must overcome a high starting or holding load.
  • Q: Can this air motor replace an electric motor?
A: It can be considered as an electric motor alternative when the required horsepower, speed, torque, mounting, spindle connection, and air supply match the application. The machine design should be reviewed by a qualified engineer before substitution.
  • Q: How much air supply does the A8R336M require?
A: Cleco lists air consumption at 83 CFM with performance rated at 90 PSI. The compressor and air lines should be sized to maintain adequate flow at the motor during loaded operation.
  • Q: What is the difference between free speed and RPM at maximum horsepower?
A: Free speed is the no-load speed of the motor. RPM at maximum horsepower is the loaded speed where the motor produces its rated power, which is 38 RPM for this model.
  • Q: What does keyed spindle mean?
A: A keyed spindle has a machined keyway that accepts a key to lock the shaft to a coupling, pulley, sprocket, or other driven component. This helps transmit torque without relying only on clamping force.
