A respirator is a piece of equipment made to prevent the user from breathing in potentially harmful atmospheres, such as fumes, vapors, gases, particulate matter like dust, and airborne infections like viruses. There are two primary types the air-purifying respirator, which filters contaminated air to produce breathing air, and the air-supplied respirator, which delivers a different source of breathable air. The cost-effective single-use, disposable face masks known as "filtering facepiece respirators" and the more durable reusable models with interchangeable cartridges known as "elastomeric respirators" are both examples of air-purifying respiratory protection. RPE is one of the PPE types that are most frequently used on construction sites.
