It is made to make sure the tool is always held perpendicular to the work piece. The foldable design takes up less space on the work area and allows for the arm to be mounted at multiple locations on the workbench. Another excellent benefit of this tool is the ability to greatly minimize side-load and cross-threading while allowing the tool to move freely around the workstation with minimal effort.
